Fri 25 July
Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival presents
The Big Chris Barber Band

Barber’s current band play early jazz styles with such skill and passion that there’s almost no-one in the world who can match them at the moment.
Far from easing towards retirement, Barber has possibly the most accomplished band he’s ever had. He’s surrounded himself and long-time colleagues, Pat Halcox and John Slaughter with a host of great players, who rip up classics from New Orleans, the early Big Band music of Duke Ellington, the blues, and even a Miles Davis tune. Every concert is a triumphant balance between artistic excellence and terrific entertainment

Sat 26 July
Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival presents
Buddy Greco with the BBC Big Band

The hip-swinging smart club singer of the 50’s and 60’s was at the centre of the glamorous LA and New York scenes.
He hung out with Sinatra and James Dean; he sang with Ella, appeared with the Rat Pack; played piano for Benny Goodman; acted with Marilyn Monroe .. and amazingly, he’s still playing piano and singing great. Greco is a consummate performer, he’s a skilful pianist, a great raconteur, and he sings swinging ultra-hip interpretations of classy songs. Joined by the glamorous and gifted singer Leszlie Anders and the brilliance of the BBC Big Band under the direction of Jiggs Whigham, this is a rare chance to see one of the most charismatic stars from a golden age when celebrity meant class
8:30pm
£21.50 - £17.50

Sun 27 July
Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival presents
Esbjörn Svensson Trio + Trio AAB

Esbjörn Svensson (piano), Dan Berglund (bass), Magnus Öström (drums)
The band that has led a revolution in jazz - selling out concert arenas around the world and winning standing ovations whenever they play! Acoustic jazz piano trio with a different edge - fresh and inventive; open to influences from rock and classical music.
They are probably the most talked about and influential group in jazz in the last decade. Svensson’s lyricism and drive; Berglund’s power: Öström’s intelligence make them individual models as well as style leaders.
Trio AAB explore an audacious mix of musics – post Ornette bop, ECM jazz, Celtic folk, drum n bass, house, the Sound of Music, and indie rock – as well as dishing up some fun along with way. Phil Bancroft (sax), Kevin MacKenzie (guitar), Tom Bancroft (drums)
8:00pm
£23.50 - £20.00

Mon 28 July
Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival presents
Little Feat

The American rock band established iconic status in the 1970’s with their unique refraction of all things southern - blues, funk, rockabilly, jazz, latino, country – into a rhythmically intoxicating mix of freewheeling jam-band, popular melody and funk-boogie.
The line-up that made the classic record, “Let It Roll” is still there, although members are often found playing in other groups (Richie Hayward with Eric Clapton, for example). Here they are, touring again – a rare opportunity to hear that polished, classy musicianship; eclectic, gritty and memorable songs; and that all round good time feel of Californian optimism and Southern boogie
8:00pm

Tue 29 July
Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival presents
30th Anniversary Concert

with Topsy Chapman’s New Orleans Band
Mike Hart’s Anniversary All Stars
Jazz Festival founder, Mike Hart, marks the Festivals’ anniversary with a specially assembled line-up of his own group and a welcome return for an old Festival favourite, and one of the great New Orleans jazz singers.
Mike’s band features Bob Barnard (trumpet), Roy Williams (trombone), and Hamish McGregor (reeds). Topsy Chapman fronts an eight piece US band playing classic New Orleans jazz
8:00pm
£18.00 - £15.00

Wed 30 July
Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival presents
Barbara Morrison

with special guests, Todd Gordon and John Altman
Morrison’s voice is earthy, real, sassy, swingin’, sensual, blues-drenched, and epitomizes everything great jazz singing is all about.

Whether it’s a ballad, a swinging blues or an up-tempo funk number, she milks it of every nuance. Tonight she sings with a band, and duets with Edinburgh’s smooth singing star, as well as bringing along the renowned film-music writer/saxophonist, Altman for some extra fun
8:00pm
£18.50 - £15.00

Thu 31 July
Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival presents
Muddy Waters

A postwar Chicago blues scene without the magnificent contributions of Muddy Waters is absolutely unimaginable.
From the late ‘40s on, he eloquently defined the city’s aggressive, swaggering, Delta-rooted sound with his declamatory vocals and piercing slide guitar attack.
His bands also featured what would become a who’s who of electric blues. Tonight, on their only UK appearance, six former members of the band, most in their 70’s and 80’s, give us the original sound: Jerry Portnoy (harp – and often a regular with Eric Clapton), Steady Rollin Bob Margolin (guitar), David Maxwell (piano), Calvin “Fuzz” Jones (bass) and Willie “Big Eyes” Smith (drums) are joined, for one night only, by the 83 year old, legendary, super-harmicona player James Cotton, also a former Muddy Waters band star
